She gave him a quick kiss and stept out of a car, not allowing her nerves to take control over her. A door stood wide open and a handwritten note was pointing down the basement of a magnificent building. October, 10th. Amsterdam. ‘Fershop, follow the sign’. It was dark in the hallway. She took a deep breath and followed the sign. She is me. A bunch of slightly geek looking yet cute dudes-people was standing in a spacy yet cosy room or rather basement, with the deemed lights on. It looked and … it felt good. ‘Hi! I’m Fer!’, his smile lit the room and his hug made the room-basement warm and … homey, if it’s even a word. ‘Hi, my name is Oksana and I ammm, eh.. eeeh such a fan of your work. (what the fck am I saying, such a cliché, stupid-stupid me. ‘Are you kidding me, it’s nothing, I’m just copying everyone’. And that was the very same second I fell in love with this amazing geek Fer Juaristi.

It was like meeting a real rock star, surreal but nice.

And then he started the ‘teaching’ part. Everyone was looking, listening, laughting, nodding their heads with the look ‘ah-okay-dude-I-totally-get-it-dude’. I felt stupid, yet happy.

A new slide appeared on the wall. A very smart one. But… all I could see was ‘bla-blaaa-bla-blaaaaa-bl-blaa’, something with the presets in your camera. With a poker face (do I even have one? I think I do) I tried to create a look that I was trying to change the camera presets. No, I wasn’t. But all I was thinking is ‘wow, he is such an amazing dad and his vivid expressions and statements and statements which include tons of Fck-words, which I love Fer even more for.

‘Love is not about a fcking kiss, at least not for me’, Fer. Fer, you turned my world upside down, which I’m very greatful you for.

An amazing couple, Tessa and Simon, or should I rather say ‘Simon-says’ (an inside joke, and now I’m feeling like Fer’s buddy, yeah!! )

Amazing Dutch geeks, who totally made my day.

I’m a total sucker for quotes. This one… changed my life.

Thank you, Fer, for chaning my life and helping me becoming a better person and a better photographer.

P.S. I made this picture the day after the workshop as a challenge because I totally sucked at an assignment called ‘and-now-kids-go-and-make-nice-portraits-of-each-other’

Busy like a bee…

Yes, I am, we are, busy like a bee. Writing a blog update, trying to scroll thru the rainforest of emails, working on weddingalbum designs and so on…So it seems…
Three things I’m doing wrong right now: I’m writing in English, not in Dutch, it’s not so good for google ratings, that’s One. I’m filling my blog with contant that is totally irrelevant, that’s Two. I’m waisting my worktime, that’s Three.
But I’m just enjoying myself so much and I love it!
Happy summer vacation time to all you guys! Just enjoy the life like cats do!

I truly have no idea what that means, that text… Mam, wat staat hier? Want dit is wel jou handschrift, vroeg ik aan haar. Ze keek om, terwijl ze haar koffers aan het uitpakken was. Ik heb haar alweer een jaar niet gezien, mijn moeder… ‘Oh, dat is oma’, zei ze terwijl ze vol toewijding souveniers uit Rusland voor haar kleinkinderen aan het uitpakken was. Ja, natuurlijk zie dat, dit is oma. Mijn, oma. ‘Hoe oud was ze toen?’ bleef ik doorvragen. ‘Ik weet het niet, jaar of 20…’. Maar dat woordje wat ik kan net goed lezen “Verenigd met…”. ‘Ik heb echt geen idee, het zal wel een vriendin zijn geweest die zij [oma] een tijdje [tijdens de tweede wereld oorlog] niet gezien heeft. Mijn ogen waren ‘gespijkerd’ aan de foto. ‘Maar wat deed de fotograaf daar?’. Voor een fractie van seconde stopte ze met dat CSI investigation van haar eigen koffer. ‘Ik weet het niet…Zonde, he, maar het zal vast een zeker een goede vriendin zijn geweest die toen op bezoek was…’ {ja, en precies die tijd, in dat bij-god-vergeten-dorpje, was er een fotograaf}. Ik heb geen idee wie die vrouw, naast mijn oma is en wat die fotograaf daar deed. I smiled. Een warme golf van herinneringen over mijn oma kwam over mij heen, als een warme zachte deken in de winter. Ik mis haar. Ik houd nog steeds zo veel van haar. ik mis haar… die vrouw met het bloemenpatroon op haar jurk.

Mijn gok: deze foto is in 1945-1947 genomen.

It’s actually kind a cool: look at the composition: a blanket on a fence, some flowers in the middel and … a cool pose, arms crossed I l-o-v-e it. The girls don’t smile. But! There can be two explanations to that. One: Russians (most of them) do not smile on pictures. Two: the girls were totally overwhelmed by the artist, the photographer…

‘Waaat? Alweer model zijn? Ik wil geen model zijn!’ zei ze resoluut. Een paar grote blauwe ogen keken hem uitdagend aan. Los haar in haar gezicht, de sporen van het chocolade ijs op haar snoetje en ‘SWEET WILD & CUTE’ t-shirt maakte dit kleine monstertje wederom onweerstaanbaar schattig. Onze Milana. Milana Alexandra. ‘Ik wil fotograaf zijn, geen model!’. De geschiedenis is geschreven. De fotograaf is geboren. Vol zelfvertrouwen deed ze Canon 400D om haar nekje. ‘Zooo, die is zwaar’, riep ze terwijl ze haar haar probeerde te bevrijden onder de band vandaan.
Klik-klik-klikker-de-klik ratelde de camera. ‘Makkie!’ riep ze lachend. ‘Ja! ik wil fotograaf worden’.

Moving to Orange County, California!
Oh, is that the only way to get everyone’s attention? ’Ja, hoor’, zie ik Chris ~~glim~~ lachen, ‘al je drie lezers vinden het vast wel een leuke grap en een boeiend verhaal’. Nou, dat weet je niet, misschien zijn het er al vier die mijn blog lezen

Drie of vier, het aantal maakt mij niet zo veel uit… Get to the point! I will! ‘Weet je wat ik raar vind?’, hoor ik hem zeggen nog steeds met een ~~glim~~ lach op zijn gezicht. Ja, ik heb mijn vermoeden, maar ben benieuwd waar hij mee komt, want er zijn niet een, niet twee en zelfs niet drie ‘dingen’ die hij raar aan mij vindt. ‘Als je schrijft, dan mix je de talen altijd door elkaar’. Bingo! Precies wat ik dacht. Ja! Ik mix de talen, maar dat ben ik! Ik vind het gewoon leuk! Okay and now getting to the point, if this story even has a point… It does! I think…

Jasmine Star. A girl. An international wedding photographer. An artist. An amazing person. Ik volg Jasmine al een paar jaar op haar blog. Ik ben een grote fan van haar werk, haar stijl en haar levensfilosofie. Vorige week kwam er een langverwachte grote envelop binnen met een grote USA stikker. D-i-t is h-e-m dan!! EXPOSED, the magazine:’The biggest mistakes. Loneliest heartbreaks. & The small victories along the way.’

“…I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY. And by love, I mean LOVE. If there was an “i” in love, I’d dot it with a tiny heart. That is how much i love the craft. Yes, I love the art, creativity, and freedom photography provides me, but it’s more than that…” Jasmine.

Ik lees en herlees artikels uit Exposed steeds weer. Nee, niet omdat mijn Engels zo slecht is . ‘Ja, mag ik hopen, na 5 jaar HBO Engels’, hoor ik Chris zeggen na mijn opmerking dat mijn Engels toch beter is dan Dutch version of his English. Ook niet omdat ik een slecht geheugen heb. ‘Exposed’ is mijn houvast, mijn vriendin die je aanmoedigt bij wat mindere tijden en geeft goede raad bij twijfels.

“They say it’s hard, because it’s hard”.
Ik had nooit illusies dat the path we chose, Chris en ik, makkelijk zou zijn. Al is het lang niet altijd rozengeur en maneschijn, ik zou nooit een ander leven wensen. I love wedding photography and by love, I mean L-O-V-E.

I’m not obsessed with Exposed, okay, a tiny little bit… okay I’m obsessed! Obsessed with Jasmine’s honesty, heartbreaking stories, her believes and hope she gives to girls like me (and guys too?).
Het magazine is uit en de drang om ook ~~mijn~~ ons verhaal te vertellen is alleen maar groter geworden. Exposed. Life. Stories., een rubriek op mijn blog, is dat een heel gek idee? ‘Voor mijn drie lezers?’ Ook, maar vooral voor mijzelf, voor later en zeker voor nu. Exposed.Life.Stories.

Volgende keer in mijn Exposed.Life.Stories. ‘When life gives you lemons’, over mij en Chris, vandaar een limoen ‘Ahh, deep…’ So stay tuned of niet…
